Πρωτοχρονιάτικα κάλαντα από την επαρχία Σητείας. New Year's kalanda (carols) from the province of Sitia

Tα παλιά χρόνια την παραμονή της Πρωτοχρονιάς έβγαιναν παρέες από άντρες με λύρες και νταούλια και έλεγαν τα κάλαντα. Οι σπιτονοικοκύρηδες του φίλευαν με ότι είχαν γλυκά, κρασί και ότι έβγαζε η γη

Πολλά πρωτοχρονιάτικα κάλαντα που ακούγονται σε χωριά της επαρχίας Σητείας αρχίζουν με τα πιο κάτω λόγια:  

Αρχή κι αρχήν τα κάλαντα κι αρχή του Γεναρίου

που εγεννήθη ο Χριστός στη γην επεριπάτει

Κι εκεά που περιπάτησε χρυσό δεντρί εβγήκε

Χρυσά’σαν τα κλωνάρια του κι ολάργυρ’η κορφή του

και κάτω η ποδίτσα του γράμματα ‘χε γραμμένα 

παπάδες κι ανεγνώθαν τα,  διάκοι καλαναρχούντα

και τα μικρά διακόπουλα στέκουν και συντηρούντα 

In old times on New Year’s Eve men with lyras(pear-shaped, three-stringed bowed musical instrument)  and daoulia (drums) were going around the houses singing New Year’s carols "kalanda" and they were offered sweets, wine, money and many other  goods as wheat, olive oil etc  .

Many carols from the province of Sitia start with the following words:

It’s the beginning of carols and the beginning of January

when Christ was born and got out to walk on earth

and where he walked a gold tree came out

golden were it’s branches  and golden it’s  top

and at the base of the trunk holy letters were written.

Priests are reading it, and deacons are chanting it

and young deacons are standing and take care of  it
